The Corton System consists of an unusually large, terrestrial planet that is orbited by a small moon.  A colony was established on the moon with the purpose of mining valuable metals that existed deep below its icy surface.

The mining colonies didn't last long as the mining operations failed to be profitable, because of the depths the minerals were located and the extreme cold temperatures on the surface.  The mines were abandoned and taken over by interstellar smugglers, who used the moon's deep system of caves as a hideouts.
